Sonoma County Fire District Fire Explorer Program
Recruitment for 2024 has now closed. To submit interest for the 2025 class, please complete an interest card. Please be on the look out for email updates in the fall and spring from jselfridge@sonomacountyfd.org regarding the 2025 recruitment. The Fire Explorer Program gives youths firsthand experience in what it takes both mentally and physically to be a professional firefighter. Participants receive fire service training under the supervision of trained firefighters.
What do Explorers do?
- Train in all aspects of the fire service during Monday night training at different Sonoma County Fire District fire stations and other training locations.
- Chance to participate in the annual California Fire Explorer Academy
- Participate in community events
- Participate in Explorer Ride-Along Program (program restricts specific activities that Explorers can perform on emergency scenes)
- All required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and uniform shirts are provided
Requirements:
- Age 15-20, or 14 AND completed the 8th grade. Those over 18 should submit an interest card to be a Volunteer Firefighter here.
- Attend two drills and then submit program application
- Oral interview with Explorer Leadership and Advisors
- Maintain 2.5 GPA
- Purchase uniform pants, belt and boots
- Comply with SCFD policies and Explorer program Rules of Conduct.
